Loneliness in children is pretty common, and contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t only affect children with no siblings. Being lonely and being alone are two different things, and loneliness can be the result of psychological health issues that might be triggered by external situations. You need to know your kid to the point where you understand if they enjoy spending time by themselves, or if they feel isolated – in which case, you should intervene. In this article, we are going to explore ten signs that can help you figure out how to tell if your kid is feeling lonely.

1. Your Kid Is Too Talkative

Active and healthy kids will often talk a lot and even ask too many questions, but if you start noticing that your child is always talking, this can be one of the signs they are feeling lonely. They talk too much because they miss social interaction, and they try to use their social skills to engage with the people around them. However, the fact that they talk too much can actually increase avoidance. Sit with them and try to explain to them how to use their communication skills in their favor.

2. You Notice Attention-Seeking Behavior

Children who feel lonely tend to seek attention – and some do it by being destructive and engaging in negative behaviors, as others tend to be goofy, playful, and try hard to be funny. Some of the best comedians became their careers without even thinking about it, by becoming the class clown as kids and get the attention of their peers.

3. They Have Imaginary Friends

One of the signs your child doesn’t have friends can be the fact that they come up with make-believe friends, with whom they seem to interact daily. Kid’s imaginations are infinite when they are young, so you don’t have to worry about their mental health just because they have an imaginary friend. However, if they talk to this invisible friend regularly, you need to worry about their loneliness and do something about it before it escalates and becomes a psychological problem.
