4. It can be hard to figure out what they are feeling

It can be pretty hard to figure out how to deal with children who have autism and depending on their level of autism; this difficulty can be bigger or smaller. Some children with autism can’t display their feelings properly, and they might seem indifferent, providing no emotional response to help you figure out how they feel or what they want. Others can even exaggerate their response, as they might become really upset over a minor inconvenience, engaging in a disproportional anger outburst. As a parent, you must figure out how to help your autistic child and how to properly communicate with them to help them manage their feelings.

5. They can display repetitive behavior

Autism repetitive behaviors are a normal part of an autistic child’s daily routine – you will start noticing that they will adopt repetitive patterns when participating in an activity that satisfies them. When they feel attracted to something, they devote their attention to it completely, and that is why you will often find them staring at things for long periods, or why they will repeat the same word over and over. Because this is how they feel comfortable, changing their routines can be a challenge.

6. They may display sensory issues

Children with autism can react differently to stimuli – some of them can ignore them completely, and others can have an exaggerated response. The ones that are over-responsive are usually extra sensitive to sound and touch, they will feel uneasy due to loud noises, and they won’t like it when other people try to touch them. If they hear a loud sound, for example, they may react by covering their ears and trying to drown the noise by making repetitive sounds.

7. They may show random reactions

Because they have trouble managing their emotions, they can start crying consistently or laughing out loud out of nowhere. Some autistic children can even display behavioral problems when they are under stress, which can include self-harm, assaulting other people, or breaking things. Also, they sometimes have trouble understanding when they are being faced with a dangerous situation, like traffic or heights, but at the same time, they can be scared of something harmless, like a toy or a shadow.
