6. Don’t punish them by confiscating their belongings

Taking away something your child likes whenever they misbehave is quite a standard parenting technique. But is it effective? According to experts, it’s not. Your kids will envision you as the toxic parent who feels like they can play the judge, jury, and executioner role. This can get them to become confused regarding power structures, and in the long run, it solves nothing. Don’t be lazy and try to get to the root of the problem instead of using a nonsensical form of punishment as a crutch. Sometimes their bad behavior or bad grades have a reason behind them, which should be your focus.

7. Let your child rest

As a parent, it’s your job to stimulate your child and introduce activities that might interest them. But signing them up for a lot of extracurricular activities can be a bit too much. There is no need to keep your kids busy every waking minute of their day. Instead, help your child explore many different things until they find at least one that they enjoy. It’s important that they can also find some time to rest and unwind between school and after school hobbies.

8. Don’t force your child to share their toys

You should teach your kids about the value of sharing, but you should never force them to share their toys, books, or games if they don’t want to. While this might seem like good parenting, it can cause your child to develop a negative association regarding the act of sharing. Young children can feel anxious about their favorite toys being broken or taken away from them for long periods of time. They don’t have a way to explain their thinking process to you, but this fact doesn’t make it any less legitimate. Try to put yourself in their shoes and imagine just randomly having to give up something you like without any certainty that it will be returned. It doesn’t feel right, does it? Well, now imagine this thinking process through the mind of a child. There you go. While children are learning to become humans, parents are also learning how to become parents. It’s ok to make mistakes, and it’s ok to fail, especially if you are doing the whole parenting thing for the first time. Fortunately, nowadays, you have all sorts of parenting advice apps to help you through any stage of your child’s development. Don’t hesitate to get help if you need to, whether from other people or technology. You are only human, after all!
