While it’s preferable that pregnant women check with their doctor about the foods to eat and the foods to avoid during pregnancy, there is a list of foods that is very common for pregnant women to avoid for different reasons, or let’s say, foods that all pregnant women should avoid eating :

• Lunch meat and deli salads: This should be completely avoided and that because most deli meats and foods contain listeria. The latter is a dangerously deadly bacteria that can cross the placenta and kill the fetus. Hence, because the life and health of the fetus matter, lunch meat, and deli salads should be strictly avoided.

• Unpasteurized juice and dairy: These are another type of foods that pregnant women should avoid at all costs. Unpasteurized juices and dairy products not only contain listeria, but also other harmful bacteria that can lead to food poisoning.

• Some Soft Cheeses: This includes certain types of soft cheeses like queso Blanco, feta, brie, and other cheeses that may contain unpasteurized dairy.

• Fish High In Mercury: While fish is considered one of the healthy foods to eat, there are some surprising types of fish that contain high levels of mercury. This includes, swordfish, shark, mackerel, and more! Exposing the fetus to such high levels of mercury can cause vision problems, hearing issues, and brain damage.

• Raw Meat And Fish: Pregnant women have a high risk to develop foodborne illnesses due to the consumption of foods that contain salmonella and toxoplasmoses like raw meat and fish. Foodborne illnesses can lead to dehydration, blood infection, fever, and intrauterine sepsis.

• Raw Eggs: whether it’s homemade Cesar salad dressing or unbacked cookie dough, all foods that contain raw eggs should be avoided during pregnancy. And this is because raw eggs contain salmonella.
