And please, be careful with comparisons. Kids don’t like being judged in comparison to other kids (nobody does, really), so don’t ask them to be like someone else or do what other kid is doing. You will make your child feel lesser and deeply hurt his self-esteem.

6. Not showing trust

You have to trust your kids so they trust you. To this end, it is essential to have open communication and to give them a certain degree of independence. Talk to your kids openly about sensitive issues, feelings, and let them share their views on some specific situations and problems that may happen. If they feel that you are willing to listen without any kind of quick judgment, your relationship will certainly be amazing and you won’t have to deal with a difficult child that always seems to be hiding something.

7. Being inconsistent

It is important not to have completely opposite reactions to two similar behaviors or situations. Children need to know what to expect and have a clear understanding of what they are allowed to do or say. Inconsistent responses can create a lot of doubt and unstable core values. However, this doesn’t mean that you must choose a specific approach and stick with it. Especially when it becomes obvious that it isn’t working as it should. It is also very important to recognize your mistakes and change your behavior accordingly. It’s even better if you openly admit that mistake. In the end, it is not about who’s right and who’s wrong; it’s about fixing the situation.
